2015 Western Lover’s Gift Guide

While shopping for gifts for the western fan the same old ubiquitous coffee mugs and John Wayne calenders pop up everywhere from Wal-Mart to Hobby Lobby and Tractor Supply. While those make good gifts sometimes one can only use so many cups and calenders a year! Not to mention that most of us would really prefer to support small businesses, steer clear of mass-produced cheap goods, and seek out a more meaningful and lasting gift that is unique and thoughtfully chosen. There is also the aspect of quality to consider.

This list was created with that in mind.

  1. The Rifleman Season One Boxed Set 67-kCkXnThis set is excellent! Aside from being one of the finest western TV shows (and one of my own top two personal favorites) these particular sets are superior to any other Rifleman sets out there.  This is the only company that publishes the shows in complete seasons that are digitally restored and chronologically presented! An added bonus is the nice little booklet that is included which has a synopsis of each episode–that is very helpful for the Rifleman aficionado looking for their favorites to re-watch!  The boxed set can be purchased from the North Fork General Store or from Amazon. (Season 2 is also available and season 3 will be available for purchase on November 27th!)

  2.  Johnny Crawford Portrait_STH0141This hand-drawn portrait of Johnny Crawford is available at The Western Desk Shop in prints ready for framing!  Makes a perfect gift for the Rifleman fan who already owns the shows, or makes a great accompaniment along with the DVDs!  It is sure to bring a smile to anyone who glimpses it on their wall, and would make a great piece of artwork for a boy’s room.

  3. A Pair Of Cowboy Bootseffb82c27fdce35976e840a9f5f02064c9e5d1b3c1bb59ed0996a2e51c26e71dc6555837e6f96181249f3306b425bd21Cowboy boots come in a style for every taste and are one practical gift that your western fan can use every day!  They also make excellent and beautiful home decor; I’ve seen them make a handsome decorative piece on a solid wood mantle and they make great bookends if you place a weight in them (a bag of coins does the trick). There are many great brands but the one that I can recommend from experience is Ariat. The boots pictured above can be purchased on their website, and though they are a bit on the pricy side the quality and craftsmanship makes them worth every penny! Here are the links to the ones pictured: top boots, middle boots, and the last pair of boots.

  4. A Good Western Book51htuGKwaSL._SX293_BO1,204,203,200_Every western fan need a good book and Shane is, in my opinion, the best western fiction book ever written. That’s not to say that I think it’s perfect, but the writing and taunt story is unsurpassed in western literature. Nothing else even comes close. From start to finish this book is unforgettable and lingers in your mind. I’ve read it numerous times and each time I enjoy it more. It truly is a masterpiece.   It is available on Amazon here, I do not own this particular edition personally (mine is out of print and difficult to find), but there are so many publications available–just pick one with cover artwork that you like and most importantly make sure that it is unabridged!

  5. Western Songs: Gunfighter Ballads And Trail Songs51X+2h7Z1yL._SX425_Marty Robbins made the west come alive in these amazing recordings. As I stated before he is unequaled in the realm of western ballads and this CD has several of his best songs: Big Iron, Master’s Call, The Strawberry Roan, and others! Available for purchase on Amazon.

A couple other fine gifts would be a framed vintage film poster of your recipient’s favorite western (can often be found on Ebay) or a nice Marlin 30/30 lever action rifle. A western card is a fine way to present your gift and from now until Christmas every purchase from The Western Desk will arrive at your doorstep with a free card with an original hand sketched saddle which can be used as a gift card or slipped in with your present as a piece of western stationary for the person you are giving to!

What are your favorite western gifts?
